The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction is given yearly to an American fiction writer. The 2006 award went to an author who spent quite a bit of time as a journalist in the Middle East, based in Cairo. Geraldine Brooks wrote Nine Parts of Desire, a book of non-fiction, which tells the stories of women around the Middle East and Foreign Correspondence detailing her experiences searching for her childhood pen pals around the world. A versatile writer, Brooks has since switched her focus from journalism to historically based fiction. She was awarded the Pulitzer for her novel March, which is set in the Civil War-era United States. March is about an army chaplain, whose character is based on the absent father in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. After leaving his family to do what he feels will be the right thing, fighting the good fight against the Confederacy, the idealistic character March becomes severely shaken and the moral dilemmas he faces begin to affect his ideals and his marriage.
In Harford County, trash has a bright future
The air inside the Harford County Resource Recovery Facility in Joppa is filled with an ever-present stench of trash. "That's the smell of money," said Frank Henderson, Harford's deputy director of environmental affairs, as he took a deep breath at the plant that residents call simply "the waste-to-energy." .
Zone Community Center want to raise about $45,000
Organizers of the Zone Community Center want to raise about $45,000, $10 at a time, to complete construction of a facility at the corner of Ann and Walnut streets in the village of Richfield Springs. The 3,200 square-foot building is framed and sided, but it needs plumbing, heating, air conditioning and interior work. "We've got about 60 percent of the building done, and we'd like to have it completed by late spring,'' Larry Kroon, president of the Richfield Springs Youth Ministry, said Tuesday. The ministry operates the Zone Youth Center, a supervised place for teenagers to gather on Friday and Saturday nights. In 1999, the Zone opened in the basement of the Church of Christ Uniting but soon outgrew the space. It relocated to 140 Main St., a building owned by local businessman Jay Bernhardt.

Even what little projects are left will REQUIRE tax increases in the future. The Idaho Transporation Department has been gutted. Idaho's entire transportation system has been uprooted and set back years because of this disaster known as GARVEE. What the Legislature should do tomorrow is tell Idaho they made a mistake 2 years ago that has cost too much. They need to gut it completely and ask Governor Otter and ITD to spend the next few months getting things back on track, making transporation the issue of 2008. Meanwhile, the "consultants" who were the beneficiaries of these so-called GARVEE bonds (the people got nothing--NOTHING--from this deal, even though millions have been spent!) can go back to the drawing table. Shame on the Legislature 2 years ago for letting this thing happen when they were put into a corner by our then governor at the last minute, without sufficient information! It was such a scam! Shame on them.
LR2 opens more doors to Land Rover
Land Rover, home of the full-size, $80,000, V-8 Range Rover SUV, now offers a more blue-collar compact LR2 at $35,000 for 6 cylinders.
Yup, for a paltry $35,000 you can own a vehicle from the same company as Queen Elizabeth's.
And as it now sells an "inexpensive" sport-utility, Land Rover itself is being sold, along with another prestigious British nameplate Jaguar.
